I’m finally using Thunderbird, the open source, stable email collector.
If you are a 
user, download thunderbird from the web site, then setup, then start it. Enter username, etc. When they ask for the POP3, type ‘pop.gmail.com‘ and the smtp is ‘smtp.gmail.com‘.
The instructions are easy to understand, so you can go though without any difficulties. NOTE that you must put your whole username when they ask for it [not the mailbox name] like joesmith@gmail.com!
